GOSHEN — Goshen College’s radio station 91.1 The Globe (WGCS-FM) is again up for several national awards.

Goshen is one of 26 colleges and universities with finalists in the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s 2012 college radio awards contest, according to a news release from the college. Winners will be announced at the 72nd Annual IBS Conference in New York City, March 2-4.

WGCS received 15 nominations, the most of any station in the country, according to the college. The station is a finalist in the best use of social media category and, for the second consecutive year, a finalist for best college station.

The Globe was named the IBS’s best college radio station in the nation in 2011.

This year, IBS created several divisions for best station, and WGCS is a finalist in the under-10,000-enrollment category.

Jason Samuel, the Globe’s general manager, said that because Goshen College has a smaller program, students are able to start out their freshman year working in any co-curriculars they choose, including The Globe.

“A lot of people don’t get to see behind-the-scenes,” he said, “but students are running this station.”

He noted that last year’s success also brought more interested students to the program. Students don’t have to be broadcasting or communication majors to work with The Globe, he added, so that yields a diverse group.

“There’s a culture that’s been established, a culture of excellence,” Samuel said. “So what happens is students see that excellence and work toward it.”

Juniors Benjamin Kelly of LaGrange and Kelsey Morris of Goshen both had four nominations. Kelly is a finalist for best news feature, best play-by-play, best sports talk program and best sports update. Morris is a finalist for best promo series, best station event promo, most innovative show and best station promotional event.

2011 graduate Trisha Handrich of Goshen is a finalist in two categories: best live music broadcast and best artist interview.

Senior Ian Shelly of Marcellus, Mich. is a finalist for best sports update. Senior Summer Hasan of Newton, Kan., is a finalist for best show promo and junior Jimmy Cassoday of Whiting is a finalist in the best live music broadcast category.

Samuel said he’s glad that national organizations are noticing the work students put in to the station.

“I’m extremely proud of them for the work that they’ve put in,” he said.

WGCS 91.1/The Globe started in 1958 and focused on broadcasting classical music until 2004, when it began playing contemporary and progressive music, including Americana, alternative acoustic, folk, singers-songwriters and world beat music. It also now features some syndicated programming.
