Elkhart police ask for help catching catalytic converter thieves

Elkhart police are asking for the public’s help in finding who is responsible for stealing several catalytic converters from an Elkhart business.

More than 20 catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles in November and about 30 more have been stolen this month, said Elkhart police Lt. Laura Koch.

Elkhart police reports show the catalytic converters were stolen from Rockport Commercial Vehicles, 2323 Middlebury St., on Nov. 21 and from Forest River, 914 C.R. 1, on Monday.

The thieves tend to then sell the stolen catalytic converters to scrap yards, Koch said. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department made the public aware Dec. 14 of the thefts of 77 catalytic converters from two Goshen businesses — Goshen Coach, 25161 Leer Drive, and Mor Ryde, 23208 Cooper Drive — earlier this month.

Anyone with information about the Elkhart thefts can call Elkhart Detective Tom DeWitt at 295-7070.
