ELKHART — Brian Thomas won a lot more easily this time.

He got 60.5 percent of the votes in the 2nd District and won over Democrat Mike Settles, 374 to 244.

Republican incumbent Thomas and Settles ran against each other in 2007, with Thomas winning by a four-vote margin.

Thomas, 62, is a downtown booster and former owner of Paul Thomas Shoes and former director of Elkhart Downtown Inc. and the Elkhart Urban Enterprise Association. He was seeking his third term on the council. Settles, 56, has supervised or managed custodial apartments. He filed for a recount in 2007, but was unsuccessful.
