Elkhart Public Library locations are participating in a program to help children have 1,000 books read to them before they begin kindergarten.
The Early Literacy Program is possible through a Target grant and a partnership with Families First. The goal is to help prepare parents and children for successful school career.
There also will be incentives for children as they advance in the program, such as book bags, bookmarks and other items. The program is geared toward Elkhart Community Schools students.
Parents interested in participating can contact the children's librarian at any Elkhart library location, or call Tina Emerick, associate director for young people's services, at 522-2223.
