Rachel Halder, a senior at Goshen College, says she's always had a "burning passion for finding new music." This school year, she has been the student station manager at Goshen College. Her responsibilities include supervising younger students who have become involved with the radio station.
Goshen College encourages its students to fulfill a SST (Study Service Term), which involves studying and service abroad. Halder spent her SST time in Peru, which included six weeks in the city of Chimbote. Halder, a women's studies minor, wanted to work with adolescent females and formed a group for local girls called "Las Chicas de Prevencion."
Not long before Halder left Chimbote, a group of prostitutes also began making bracelets. Halder set up a bank account through which she could transfer money made by selling the bracelets back to Chimbote. With the first round of money, Benjamin Aguilar, a man with whom she worked in Chimbote, started a group of what Halder describes as "tech programs" that involve instruction in cosmetology, welding and candy making, among other disciplines.
To Halder's understanding, the money that she has sent back has allowed the women to leave prostitution.
